OSHA has finalized a revision to the rule on proper fit for personal protective equipment (PPE). The final rule explicitly states that PPE must properly fit any construction worker who needs it. This change brings the construction industry in line with general industry, which already required properly-fitting PPE.
Many types of PPE must be sized to a worker’s specific measurements in order to fit properly. When PPE that needs to be properly sized is not, it can be ineffective and increase the likelihood of injury. For example, oversized gloves or protective clothing creates the hazard of catching on machinery. Likewise, improperly fitting PPE can discourage use because of discomfort.
Employers in the construction industry should be aware of this new rule and provide properly fitting PPE to all workers. Employers should pay special attention to women, physically smaller workers, and physically larger workers, who have historically raised concerns about improperly fitting PPE.
